What is the Opportunity?

The ITB Policy requires contractors that bid on major defence contracts to invest in and subcontract to Canadian companies with established industrial capabilities, emerging technology with potential for rapid growth, and/or companies who's domestic capacity is essential to national security.

Companies may qualify to participate if they drive innovation through Canadian Key Industrial Capabilities:

  • Advanced Materials
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Clean Technology
  • Cyber Resilience
  • Remotely-piloted Systems and Autonomous Technologies
  • Space Systems
  • Aerospace Systems and Components
  • Armour
  • Defence Systems Integration
  • Electro-Optical / Infrared (EO/IR) Systems
  • Ground Vehicle Solutions
  • In-Service Support
  • Marine Ship-Borne Mission and Platform Systems
  • Munitions
  • Shipbuilding, Design and Engineering Services
  • Sonar and Acoustic Systems
  • Training and Simulation

If your business currently works in any of the above sectors, or has the capability to work in any of these sectors, you may qualify for funding and/or contracts with major defence contractors serving the government of Canada.

Canada's Industrial and Technological Benefits Policy

The ITB Policy requires contractors that bid on major defence contracts to submit a Value Proposition, an economic proposal to Canada that outlines how the contractor will support the long-term growth and sustainability of Canada’s defence industry, support the growth of prime contractors and suppliers in Canada, including small and medium business (SMBs) in all regions of the country, Enhance innovation through R&D in Canada, and more. When a contract is won, the contractor is required to invest an amount equal to the contract value into the Canadian economy. This creates a major opportunity for Canadian companies that could be part of the defence sector supply chain. For more information, visit the ISED website, or meet with a grant hero.
